![]() Polymer casts have much better resistance to the corrosive substances used to clear the cast from the tissue surrounding it. 1, 2, 4 The solidification time was shortened to a minute scale employing polymeric resins, but it could also become a limiting factor if longer injection times were still a requirement. The time polymeric resins were introduced in the chemistry field, they came to solve several problems, including the extremely long solidification time of previous materials such as wax or natural resins. Most of the published research on corrosion casting reports the use of commercial materials in the form of resins. Thus, corrosion casting provides a method to selectively dose contrast agents to the targeted systems. ![]() The most successful works for generating models through 3D imaging combine computed axial tomography (CT scan) and corrosion casting. 12 3D imaging is advancing in offering anatomical models, 13 yet the challenge lies in the definition which can be achieved. The protocol for making slices implies steps that alter each time the configuration of the original sample, for example, slicing with a microtome compromising the accuracy of the model. 3D reconstruction is based on the assembly of images from histological slices. 3, 8- 11 It is preferred compared to alternative methods such as three-dimensional (3D) imaging and 3D reconstruction, which potentially could generate models for anatomical studies. It has been the preferred technique in identifying anatomical structures and functions. 8 Vascular corrosion casting is often associated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis because it allows studying aspects such as spatial configuration, vessel dimensions, and endothelial characteristics. 1, 3- 7 There have been also several names used to describe the final product, such as a micro-corrosion cast, an injection replica, a vascular corrosion cast, and a vascular cast. Nonetheless, it can also be employed to obtain replicas from many other systems such as urinary, biliary, lymphatic, and respiratory systems. The technique is often known as vascular corrosion casting as well because it has been most frequently used to study the cardiovascular system. Several variations enrich the concept of corrosion casting. ![]() Core processing steps in corrosion casting toward polymeric casts: (a) Filling of a hollow anatomical space with the polymeric resin to let it solidify (b) removing of the surrounding tissues by corroding them (c) cleaning and drying of the obtained cast
